Our people are at the heart of National Museums Liverpool (NML) and each employee makes a difference every day. Together we create memorable experiences for everyone and challenge expectations.
We pride ourselves on being a place for everyone where we can be our true selves in a supportive environment to do our best work. We are always aiming higher, aspiring to be more representative of the communities we serve and through our people, we are building a culture which embeds trust, respect, and inclusion helping us to evolve as an organisation every day.
Are you looking for an exciting new role? Are you ready to do your best work yet? National Museums Liverpool could be the place for you.
We’re looking for a Head of International Slavery Museum to join our busy Museums & Partnerships Directorate, where you’ll work with colleagues from across the organisation to help us on our journey to becoming the best museum “league” in the world.
Reporting to the Executive Director of Museums & Participation, you will provide leadership to the International Slavery Museum and its curatorial department.
This is an important time to join National Museums Liverpool as we begin to realise our ambition and vision for our Waterfront Transformation. Following our successful National Lottery Heritage Fund Heritage Horizons Award, your focus will be the expansion of the International Slavery Museum (ISM) into the Dr Martin Luther King Jr Building through our project Igniting Ideas & Action.
We expect you’ll be a brilliant communicator with substantial experience in community engagement, especially around inclusive histories and the wider Black experience, as well as in developing strong narratives and content for museums. You will need energy, creativity and resilience to lead ISM through its evolution by working with communities, partners, colleagues, funders and other stakeholders in Liverpool, the UK and internationally.
We’re looking for an experienced individual with strong subject matter knowledge with a demonstrable track record of leading in a museum or community setting. You will have experience of working in or with museums and museum collections using a community-led model to co-create exhibitions, spaces and programmes. Together we’ll create memorable experiences for everyone as well as challenge their expectations.
