Job Opportunity: ‘Great White’ Shark Sculpture Project Assistant (Temporary)
This role offers an excellent opportunity to gain ‘hands on’, experience of working on a public art project with an established artist this summer.

The Job: Artist Faith Bebbington is looking for a project assistant to work throughout August, to support the production of a ‘Great White Shark’ sculpture using 100’s of reclaimed plastic milk bottles. The sculpture is being commissioned by Veolia Environmental Services for the company’s new plant in Dagenham, which recycles plastic milk bottles into pellets for re-use. The sculpture will be based on the largest predatory fish in the world – the Great White Shark.
This job is an important practical role to support the successful production of a large-scale sculpture, in a short time frame.
Key Details:
• Project Assistant work for a minimum 2 days a week, between Tues 8th August – Fri 8th
September.
• The project assistant will receive supervision from Faith at her Love Lane studio.
• The shark sculpture will be 2 metres in length, (approx. half the length of an actual Great White Shark).
• Faith will design and build the shark’s framework.
• The project assistant will produce components for Faith to build the sharks skin with.
Project Assistant tasks:
• Clean, cut and prepare plastic milk bottles (Faith has collected, de-labelled, & cleaned a lot of bottles)!
• Make up literally hundreds of ‘sharks teeth’ components from the plastic milk bottles.
• Ensure adequate quantity of ‘sharks teeth’ are produced to complete the project within the timescale.
- Skills & qualities needed:
- Practical, creative person with good manual dexterity
- Methodical with excellent attention to detail
- Ability to work quickly, consistently and accurately on repetitive tasks
- Previous experience of working with hot glue gun and heat sealers would be useful.
- (Faith will provide training on all the processes required)
Fees:
A modest flat fee of £500 is available for the project assistant’s time, payable on a temporary, freelance basis (i.e. Project Assistant is responsible for paying their own tax and National Insurance). This fee is for a minimum of 10 days work @ £50 per day, for plastic milk bottle preparation & production of sharks teeth in various sizes and mass quantities!

About the Artist: Faith Bebbington is a professional artist /sculptor based in Liverpool and working across the UK, who has over fifteen years of public art experience. She has created artwork for a range of public settings including schools, hospitals, psychiatric intensive care units, office courtyards and neighbourhood parks in consultation with a diverse range of people. Faith enjoys the challenge of creating temporary and permanent site-specific sculptures for public spaces, to interact with and animate the built environment.
Previous recycled sculpture commissions for Veolia:
In 2012 Veolia Environment first commissioned Faith to create a baby elephant made entirely from recovered tin and plastic, for display in the Recycling Discovery Centre at Gilmoss on Merseyside.
In 2013 Veolia Environment commissioned a life size Bengal tiger from plastic milk bottles for Tiger Tracks the worlds largest tiger conservation event at St Pancras International Station 1st – 21st March 2013. Created using over 300 plastic recycled milk bottles the piece helps raise awareness of the plight of wild tigers. Now sited at Veolia HQ Pentonville Rd, London
In 2014 the FA Group and Veolia Environment Services asked Faith to create the Wembley Lions; two life-size lion sculptures made entirely from reclaimed Wembley stadium plastic and cardboard waste, to celebrate Wembley’s achievements in resource management and to remind staff, partners and visitors of the importance of re-using our valuable resources.
In 2016 Faith created her own ‘Super Rat’ a 4.5metre long sculpture from over 400 plastic milk bottles. You may have spotted the oversized Super Rat making a pop – up appearance in the Baltic Triangle.
