Tullie House Museum & Art Gallery Trust is a leading independent regional museum welcoming over 250,000 visitors every year and, as part of the Cumbria Museum Consortium, one of Arts Council England’s National Portfolio Organisations. Our stunning collections cover Fine & Decorative Art, Natural Science, Social History and Archaeology. Highlights include one of the largest collections of pre-Raphaelite artwork in the north of England, Roman material of international importance that centres on Hadrian’s Wall (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and a huge collection of specimens from Cumbria, the most bio-diverse county in England.
In 2016 we launched a new Museum Manifesto aiming to create a museum fit for the 21stcentury, a museum that has something to say about Carlisle, Cumbria and the world in which we live; a museum that unleashes creativity and invites co-creation; a museum which is collections based, curatorially informed and audience focussed; a museum with a human face providing a third space anchoring community life.
The core purpose of this role is to lead, motivate and develop the Curatorial Team to manage the care and preservation of the collections to the highest possible standards and, crucially, increase access to collections. This will involve effective communication and greater collaboration with the Learning Team to increase engagement opportunities for key audiences including school groups, families, young people and vulnerable adults.
As part of this role you will develop and refresh permanent displays using the collections in innovative and inspiring ways, and work in partnership with the Exhibitions Team to deliver an outstanding programme of temporary exhibitions and accompanying events programme, including Member events.
This role is an exciting opportunity to be part of a major culture change within the organisation, ensuring community engagement and financial sustainability are at the heart of all activity within your team. We want our Curatorial Team to be outward facing and audience focussed, and, under the guidance of the Head of Collections & Engagement, it will be your responsibility to motivate and manage your staff to fulfill this remit and make the most of their skills and expertise.
