About FACT
FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology) is the UK’s leading media arts centre, based in Liverpool. It is a space where people, art and technology meet. Since the opening of the award-winning building in 2003, FACT has welcomed nearly four million visitors, and every year over 300,000 people visit the three galleries, lab spaces, café, bar and four cinema screens.
In 2016 FACT commissioned 18 new artworks, and presented 53 ambitious re-staging of existing work. FACT’s commissions and exhibitions also toured across the UK and to Australia, South Korea, Spain and France, resulting in 486,000 visits. Over the years, FACT has worked with internationally acclaimed artists, including Pipilotti Rist, Krzysztof Wodiczko, Weerasethakul Apichatpong, and Wu Tsang.
FACT’s critically acclaimed Learning Programme experiments with the notion of the art centre as an expanded classroom for lifelong learning, a space for critical dialogues, artistic experiences and intergenerational encounters.
In 2018, the exhibitions and public programme are an invitation to play with FACT, celebrating a decade since Liverpool was European Capital of Culture. This feeds into FACT’s mission to originate, articulate and present a programme of excellent innovative art through three keys strands: Exhibition & Public Programme, Learning, and Research & Innovation.
About The Future World of Work
The Future World of Work is a city-wide programme reimagining what employment will look like in the near future through participatory art experiences, industry based residencies, and research and engagement initiatives.
TFWOW sets out to explore challenging scenarios and the implications of technology and innovation on issues of labour. From sole traders to multinational corporations, working life has been irreversibly changed by technology and globalisation, be it off shore call centres, flexible hour contracts, or automated production lines. TFWOW revolves around five key themes (the gig economy, skilling up, working time, de-globalisation, and automation and AI), and aims to inspire and engage communities, young people, artists, academics, entrepreneurs and employers across Liverpool and beyond.
The Programme of Activities will take place throughout 2018 as part of Liverpool 2018, a year-long programme of cultural projects to mark the tenth anniversary of Liverpool being European Capital of Culture. It will include: a large scale participatory new commission; a series of workplace residencies; a public programme of talk and debates in collaboration with the International Business Festival 2018; an intergenerational learning programme; a mass participation event featuring public realm and public engagement activities; a major gallery exhibition at FACT in 2019; a bespoke portal/website to support research and dissemination as well as access to further information around training and resources; and a marketing campaign.
