Background:
Manchester Jewish Museum (MJM) has temporarily re-located to Manchester Central Library until 2021 while a major redevelopment project takes place. During this phase we are looking for a visual artist/maker to use our photographic collection as inspiration to create work on the theme of belonging. We are keen to use our temporary re-location as an opportunity to experiment involving visitors in visual arts practice to activate stories embedded in our photographs.
Maker Programming Strand:
We are looking for an artist who is enthusiastic about involving library family audience and community groups in developing work. This strand will involve delivering monthly sessions at our pop-up space in Manchester Central Library and other locations in the community, culminating in a display/exhibition in the library in March 2020 as part of our Festival of Belonging. We would like to experiment with being able to produce high-quality exhibition outputs based on community involvement. This will contribute to the Festival of Belonging, where we will programme work that explores what it is to belong, how it feels not to belong and how we assimilate.
Our photographs represent 30% of our overall collection and are an important source of social history of Manchester’s Jewish communities. Our photo albums are one of the most popular features in our Pop-up Museum space in the library. The photos are an invaluable insight into Jewish trades, the changing area of Cheetham Hill, social and sporting clubs, parties, weddings and family groups. The collection also includes many anonymous portraits, about which we know very little. You will be supported by our Creative Producer in accessing and searching our photographic collection.
Fee:
There is a fee of £5,000 available for this strand (to include materials, travel, expenses and any other costs). There is also a negotiable extra funds available for construction of the exhibition in March.
