Overview
Art in Liverpool, Liverpool’s favourite independent arts listing site since 2004, and leaders of Independents Biennial, are launching a new programme of workshops to engage some of the most creative minds in our city with the arts.
SOL (Second or Other Language) is a new programme of informal English language study focussed around a creative curriculum informed by the studios and galleries of Merseyside. The sessions will be open to refugees, asylum seekers and vulnerable migrants on this free programme which seeks to drastically change the level of interaction between newcomers to this city, and the institutions that help to define it.
Role Description
As course leader you will be leading groups of up to 20 in tours, talks and hands on workshops. The sessions are weekly, with most sessions at Tate Liverpool. Once a month the session will travel to a partner gallery, studio or cultural space, where the session will be co-led between yourself and a curator or member of the programme team at that institution.
Each month’s curriculum will be affected by the previous month’s visit, and any focusses the group has requested. While we require the course leader to be a qualified ESOL tutor, this is NOT an ESOL course. It is a top-up in addition to any other provision participants currently access, and is designed to build on their language skills, and help them access cultural spaces in an informal way.
You will be working with the Directors of Art in Liverpool to build this course, and be responsible for delivery, and for any volunteers helping with sessions. Reporting and evaluation will be carried out with directors, volunteers, partner venues and participants every six months.
The sessions are open to all levels of English Language ability, and rather than following a formal course of accredited ESOL, will be about creating new social circles, and fostering creative talent.
One of the many anticipated outcomes of the sessions, which will run weekly until July 2021 (with the potential to extend), is a publication and exhibition forming a core part of the Independents Biennial 2020 programme, and part of our partner festivals in 2021.
Person Specification
Essential
- TEFL/TESOL qualification
- Experience of teaching English as a Second or Other Language to multiple levels (Entry 1 – Level 6)
- Demonstrable ability to research, devise, deliver and evaluate the course curriculum / programme and activities for adult learners
- Proven ability to lead yourself and others
- Proven ability to work to set outcomes, and excel
- Experience leading creative workshops (hands on, or taught)
- Understanding of relationships with vulnerable adults, and the ability to maintain a professional but friendly relationship with them
- Understanding of safeguarding and safety requirements in courses of this type
- Demonstrable knowledge and understanding of diversity and inclusion
Desirable
- Teaching English as a Second or Other Language at Pre-Entry Level
- Experience leading long running arts programmes
- Speak a second or other language (or have English as a second language) – preferably with professional context
- Educated to degree level in a relevant subject (creative arts, education, language)
