We are seeking to engage two experienced researchers of modern and contemporary Asian art with in-depth, specialist knowledge of South Asian art, to conduct research for the Tate Research Centre: Asia (TRC Asia) http://www.tate.org.uk/about/our-work/tate-research/research-centres/asia
The Adjunct Researchers will work closely and in a collaborative way with colleagues in the TRC Asia. Liaison with various other Tate departments such as the Curatorial departments may also be required. They will be required to act as the public face of TRC Asia in some cases.
The principal tasks include undertaking original research and publishing detailed studies on the modern and contemporary Asian art. You will have an intellectual commitment to furthering knowledge about Asian art, in particular South Asian art, and be able to assist with the planning and delivering of the TRC Asia’s programme.
Tate already has an extensive network of contacts within the region (including artists, curators and academics) however the role requires the further development of this network and dissemination of information and knowledge throughout Tate to further develop the internal knowledge base.
To fulfil this brief you will need:
• An in-depth knowledge and scholarly involvement in modern and contemporary Asian art, particularly South Asian art supported by a relevant post-graduate degree, preferably a PhD
• A track record of publication and research and demonstrable knowledge of the field.
• An established network of contacts, an understanding of the issues surrounding researching modern and contemporary art for museums and a knowledge of the current scholarly discourse
• Excellent research and writing skills in English, including the capacity to write authoritative texts for specialist readership as well as accessible texts for a general public
• Demonstrable excellence in verbal communication and presentation and the ability to represent Tate externally
• Attention to detail with excellent editing and proof reading skills
• Ideally fluent speaking and academic-standard writing skills in the language of your area of expertise
• Ideally based in the region or able to travel as required
One contract is for 12 months and one for six months. The contracts are offered on a freelance basis with flexible start dates. However, both contracts must be completed by 30 November 2018. The 12 month contract attracts a fee of £30,000 per annum and the 6 month contract attracts a fee of £15,000 per annum. Fees are fully inclusive of all travel and subsistence.
Application Information
Candidates are asked to write a brief research proposal (circa 1,000 words) outlining the research project they will undertake if successful. This must include a clear methodology, list of outputs, archives and resources necessary and a short bibliography. Please submit this paper along with a single page covering letter, a current CV, two writing samples of (preferably) published work and details of two references.
