The Wordsworth Trust has been providing training opportunities for people starting careers in museums, libraries and literature for over 30 years, and has a high reputation across the sector for the standard of training that it provides.
Trainees will receive a unique, all-round experience (five out of seven days a week) of working in both a historic house and a working museum that receives 50,000 visitors a year. The Wordsworth Trust is currently one of three partners in the Cumbria Museum Consortium, an Arts Council-funded three-year initiative. For the Wordsworth Trust, this has led to a particular emphasis on education, community outreach and work with young people.
Alongside visitor services (such as delivering guided tours of Dove Cottage, selling tickets and merchandise in the gift shop, and welcoming visitors to the Museum and the Collection Centre), trainees will gain experience of caring for, maintaining and developing a Designated collection of approximately 63,500 catalogued items. The curatorial and learning team will equip trainees with a knowledge and experience of museum practice and procedures, the recording and caring of collections, education, outreach and custodianship. There may also be opportunities for experience in fundraising and marketing.
Applicants should demonstrate an enthusiasm for heritage and learning, and are expected to develop a knowledge of British Romanticism during the traineeship. Previous experience of museum work is not essential.
The Traineeship will run from January 2016 (starting date to be decided) until 2 January 2017. It is expected that trainees will commit to the full programme.
Trainee roles are funded by Arts Council England, and trainees will be paid the National Minimum Wage. On-site accommodation is available to rent.
Applications will close on Sunday 22 November. Interviews will take place between Tuesday 1 December and Friday 4 December.
