Public Art Commission
Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
Aintree University Hospital -Main Entrance
Liverpool University Hospitals Foundation Trust (LUHFT) invites applications from artists to create a high quality, innovative and thought provoking piece of public art. The proposed new artwork will be displayed outside the reconfigured main entrance and will complement the existing commissioned works on display around the Aintree site.
Project Brief
The artwork must:-
• Relate to the overall theme of the commission
• Be site specific and weather durable
• Create a sense of “welcome”
• Reflect Aintree hospital’s place as an anchor institution
Commission Theme
The overarching theme is “Metamorphosis”
Artists are invited to explore this theme in any medium providing they adhere to the project brief. We have chosen this theme to reflect the transformation and continual change within the hospital and the hospital estate. There is a symbiotic and collaborative relationship between staff members of every discipline who when working together exemplify the phrase ‘the whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts’. Whilst there is considerable latitude within the brief this will be a very prominent piece of art at our main entrance and will be the first welcome to the hospital.
Commission Location
The commission location is to the left hand side of the main entrance
Commission Budget £10-15K
For the proposed piece the quoted amount should cover :-
The workshop period, any inspirational or engagement visits to the site, transport costs, materials and the development and creation of the final work.
Installation will be the responsibility of Aintree Hospital maintenance team guided by a risk assessment and method statement which includes detailed installation plans from the commissioned artist(s).
Aintree is an extremely busy hospital site with high patient throughput. Maintaining a clean and safe environment is important therefore all artwork must be robust, easy to clean and maintain.
Commission Deadlines
The closing date for submissions 5pm Friday October 30th 2020.
Anticipated installation date 30th March 2021
All submissions will be reviewed by an Arts Steering Group and shortlisted candidates will be invited to a short interview before a judging panel at Aintree Hospital site in mid-November. We envisage the successful artist(s) to begin work immediately with the artwork ready for installation in March/April 2021.
If selected for commission there will be consultation, engagement and participation with the Estates team at Aintree Hospital.
