Open Call for Visual Arts, The Brighouse Festival
Open Call for a group show and artist’s micro residency on the theme of ‘Bridges’. All media considered: 2D art, painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, video, installation, print, sound, etc.
The Brighouse Festival is an annual arts festival in the market town of Brighouse, Calderdale, West Yorkshire. Our theme for this year’s programme is ‘Bridges’: Bridging Arts with Community. The origin of our town name is ‘Bridge-House’, and we have four prominent bridges linking: motorway, canal, roman roads, and the railway to our town centre.
What: Open call for a visual art group show and artist’s micro residency with works relating to the theme of ‘Bridges’.
When: The Brighouse Festival 2017 (7th – 14th October)

1. Artist residency in open space (which will be open to visitors at advertised times to be agreed) during the festival period. Last year we hosted the micro residency at The Old Town Hall (see images of installation of ‘Rubbish Brighouse’ – a whole town sculpture made from discarded objects). Any installation needs to respect the space: wooden floorboards, walls can have temporary hangings, and visitor access during selected opening times.
2. Public spaces (on the streets). Art that can be displayed on the streets of Brighouse, one day only (Saturday/s recommended for maximum footfall). *Note: work may be displayed on open and uncovered footpaths so subject to weather conditions.
3.Group exhibition for works to be displayed alongside the micro-residency which will take focus of the exhibition. Site TBC but all spaces in Brighouse town centre are prominent locations with high passer-by footfall, there is an additional possibility of a sale on the last Saturday of the festival.
Participatory works are encouraged for strands 1 and 2.
Theme: Bridges, Transport, Bridging the gap, Bringing people closer together, Networking / linking, Bridging generations (inter-generational work), Connecting two or more things together, Reaching out, Industry (mills, revolution), Community cohesion, Crossing boundaries (inter-disciplinary work), Extending knowledge / workshops, Traversing (walking tour, guided tour), and History and Heritage.
Fee: There is a small artist stipend available for the exhibiting artist provided for the artist in residence. All materials, equipment and fixings/fittings to be supplied by the artist.
To apply: Outline proposals with supporting images of new or existing works. Please stipulate which strand(s) you are interested in (1. Micro Residency, 2. Public Spaces or 3. Group Exhibition). Please provide link to websites, blogs, videos etc. Please include your estimated budget including travel / return delivery costs.
Our objectives are to advance the education of, and to promote public appreciation of, the arts for the people of Brighouse, county of West Yorkshire and the Nation at large. We aim to develop and coordinate performances, exhibitions, workshops and free events to give artistic experiences that enrich people’s lives, inspire participation and are a catalyst for social cohesion: Bridging Arts with Community.
