Open call for Smithdown Primary School residency – Metal x Tate Liverpool
We are inviting Expressions of Interest from artists to take part in a month-long residency at Smithdown Primary School.
The residency will be supported by ourselves in partnership with Tate Liverpool, with the aim of co-creating an exhibition of work with Year 5 pupils for the Clore Studio at Tate Liverpool in June 2023.
This activity will sit within a series of Metal led ‘listening’ based residencies that invite artists to make connections outside of the arts sector to build new partnerships and to bring artists’ projects into different contexts. Places like local takeaways, youth clubs and shops. It will also sit within Tate Liverpool’s wider schools’ engagement programmes, expanding and deepening relationships with local communities.
We’d like to explore themes of listening, gathering and play over the next two years. The residencies will spark curiosity and imagination, bring people together and build exciting environments for play.
You will plan and deliver a minimum of 4 workshops (half a day with each class) and take part in a class visit to Tate Liverpool.
The workshops will need to happen across April-May with the school visit planned for Wednesday 26 April. The exhibition will happen at Tate Liverpool in June.
You will be invited to explore the Tate Collection and to use artworks to inspire and inform the workshops and to share different skills with the pupils that can be utilised in their own art making.
We want the residency artist to learn about the pupil’s experiences of living and growing up in Picton and how this can inform their artwork, finding imaginative ways for Year 5 students to explore and respond to the themes of the project.
Themes could include but are not limited to:
- Family and Identity
- People of Picton
- Working Class histories
- Journeys
Outputs:
With Metal and Tate’s support you will:
- Plan and deliver the workshops
- Liaise with Smithdown Primary staff to schedule the workshops and support the wider learning of the class
- Research the Tate collection and ways it can relate back to your own practice
Fee: £2500 (+ a separate materials, travel and exhibition budget)
To submit an expression of interest please fill in this application form (NB: we don’t expect you to spend longer than an hour on this).
Outline your relevant experience, including ways that you have previously worked collaboratively with people in your practice and what you feel you could bring to this project. Previous experience of working with young people is not essential but we are keen to hear how your practice might engage and inspire the creativity of Year 5 students. (500 word max)
