Wigan STEAM is a pioneering arts organisation providing exciting learning opportunities, workshops, and exhibitions for people to explore science, engineering and technology through creative activities.
We are offering an emerging artist an exciting opportunity to work and exhibit in our gallery this summer, as part of our new Natus programme. Natus is a two-year programme of exhibitions, residencies, and commissions, intended to support early career artists and enable the local community to have high quality art experiences. We welcome proposals from artists working in all mediums whose practice has links with STEM subjects, and are particularly interested in hearing from artists who work with digital media.
The selected artist will take up residence in the gallery for a minimum of 6 days over a period of three weeks in July. The resulting artwork will be exhibited in the gallery in August. We would like the proposed project to have an element of public engagement – the artist must commit to working with people in the local community for a minimum of one two-hour session during the 6 days, although we welcome more if appropriate. This public engagement may be used in two ways:
- As research and development, to form a basis for the artist to produce artwork independently
- As a collaboration, in which the artist works together with people in the community to create artwork
Alongside this, the artist will be required to work with us to develop engagement materials for visitors during the exhibition, and do a talk at the exhibition opening.
The artist must commit to 6 days between 16th July and 4th August.
The exhibition will run from 11th August – 4th September, with the opening event taking place on the 11th August 1pm – 3pm.
The artist must have a DBS certificate and public liability insurance.
