Metal is delighted to announce a call-out for its 2021/2022 Artist-in-Residence programme, offering 21 opportunities to creatives who live and/or work locally to us. The offer is to enable a short period of focused research and development time for a new project or line of enquiry – or for a project or body of work that is already underway. The opportunity is open to artists working in any artform and whilst it is not compulsory, we do have a particular interest in artists and ideas that respond in some way to Place – for example, through connections with people, passions, histories, landscape or other particularity of the places and communities that we are part of.

Applicants can be individuals/collaborations/collectives and must be based in our local areas – i.e: Peterborough or Cambridgeshire and surrounding villages; all boroughs of the Liverpool City Region; or South Essex (Basildon, Brentwood, Castle Point, Rochford, Southend-on-Sea Borough, Thurrock).

Following the positive feedback from our Residency programme during 2020, and given the on-going uncertainties and restrictions, we are offering a hybrid residency model where artists can choose to work from home or in their in own studio supported by Metal staff online; or in our Metal spaces which all have established Covid protocols in place (Chalkwell Hall, Chauffeurs Cottage, Edge Hill Station) or a combination of the two.

Metal’s Offer:

Each selected artist will receive a fee of £1000 paid in two instalments.
You can access up to 20 days of:-
● the facilities in our buildings including studio and rehearsal space
● staff time to support your research, whether this is mentoring and feedback sessions, brokering relationships with communities or support with funding applications.
● You will also have the opportunity to participate in our other programmes including Metal New Artist Network (MNAN) and Future Network.
● We also offer sessions where all the selected Artists-in-Residence can meet and share ideas and thoughts as part of a peer-to-peer network.

Examples of previous residencies:-
● Charley Genever undertook a period of research for a new project ‘Aesthetic’, exploring how poetry can be consumed visually and created ‘wearable poetry’ in response to researching why women wear slogans on their clothes.
● Artist and Filmmaker Amber Akaunu used the residency to create an open call out for people with afro hair to share their “Afro Hair Ritual” for a new film work.
● Sadie Davidson, an award-winning slam poet used the residency to explore her first memoir style novel

Feedback:

‘I found the residency very useful; I used this time to experiment and engage with new materials. I’ve been able to focus on a specific body of work. It provided me time and focus to explore this new direction.’

‘During these times, it is very isolating to work alone. Having Metal’s support and audience was something I really looked forward to.’

‘The residency was a perfect opportunity to allow time to research and develop my project idea without needing to know the end goal when I was applying. I’d had the idea for a long time but wasn’t confident enough to delve into the research independently, and the support of the Metal team provided that confidence and support.’

‘The residency allowed me to pilot ideas and test out research models ready to apply for an Arts Council Project Grant.’

How do I apply?

In the application form we ask you to share with us:

  • How you will use this opportunity (your research idea); how it will develop your practice; and what relevant help you think we can provide (300-500 words)
  • Your biography with examples of your previous work (images, videos, audio files, written texts)
  • Your CV (optional)

We welcome video or audio files as an alternative to filling out the written application form. If you have any questions or another way you would like to suggest to make this process accessible to you, please get in touch with your local site administrator to discuss – contacts are included on the application page.
