Local Facilitator, FACT

We are looking for a freelance facilitator local to Liverpool City Region to work with us and artist Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley on a new project called The Imaginists Society. The project will work with local young people and use games and archives to create art which questions how technology can be used to explore and change our identities. This project is running from June 2021 until June 2022. The work by the facilitator will be carried out over the equivalent of 10 days in August and September 2021. The facilitator will be paid a fee of £250 per day (£2500 in total) and will also receive mentorship from Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley and FACT Learning Team. The mentorship will provide support and insight into how to design interactive and collaborative projects with participants.

ABOUT THE IMAGINISTS SOCIETY

The Imaginists Society is a collaborative digital art programme across the Liverpool City Region. It aims to explore how to involve young people and communities in the creation of artworks. It aims to create a space for young people to share their thoughts and experiences on power, identity and systems of control. The project asks: what determines someone’s identity? Can technology be used to explore and change our identities?

ABOUT DANIELLE BRATHWAITE-SHIRLEY

For this project, FACT is working with artist Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley to remember and archive communities in Liverpool from their own perspective. Working together to create an interactive game, participants of the The Imaginists Society will map out their existence within Liverpool, using the power of imagination to reclaim, retell and record their stories.

Danielle is an artist and archivist who uses video games, animation, sound and performance to create work centring Black trans people. www.daniellebrathwaiteshirley.com/

BRIEF

Usually, young people under 18 years old are not consulted in societal issues and the possibilities of technology, though they are expert users of online platforms and social media. This can mean that young people, in particular from marginalised communities, are not receiving opportunities to participate in these conversations.

The facilitator for this project should be driven by creating spaces for young people and communities to speak their mind, and to help understand how their identity affects their experience of Liverpool. The role requires an understanding and acknowledgement of the lack of opportunities for young people, especially those impacted by racism, sexism or poverty. Danielle would like to work with someone who is able to listen attentively to those within the group, encouraging all people to speak; every voice is as important as each other.

We particularly welcome and encourage applications from Black and minoritised groups who are underrepresented in FACT Liverpool at this time.

The facilitator does not need any experience with games, archives or art. They need to be confident in approaching groups of people working with possible conflicting ideas of experience. The facilitator will be vital in rooting the project in Liverpool’s communities and for facilitating wider engagement.

The facilitator will deliver sessions for families and young people. The sessions will explore the themes and the questions that arise and will involve using technology, which could include gaming and augmented reality. The delivery of these sessions will take place in August/September 2021 and will include 4 sessions aimed at families & 5 sessions for young people.
