Comics Artist for Graphic Encounters, SICK! Festival

We’re calling for expressions of interest from comics’ artists to take part in Graphic Encounters.

Graphic Encounters brings together outstanding female comics artists with women experiencing health problems related to social inequalities in Manchester. The project, a collaboration between SICK! Festival and the Research Impact and Public Engagement Team at Manchester Metropolitan University, will be presented as part of SICK! Festival 2019, which runs for three weeks between 18 September and 5 October 2019.

Graphic Encounters is rooted in a process of dialogue between three groups of women: artists, service users and carers. These conversations will provide the content from which artists create large-scale graphic narratives. The graphic narratives will be displayed in commercial advertising spaces across Manchester, including bus-stops, tram stops and billboards. As part of the project, the artists selected will lead a series of workshops for aspiring female comics artists living in Manchester and the North West.

What we’re looking for

We are seeking applications from female comics artists, ideally based in Manchester or the North West. Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate work that has potential to provide a strong visual presence in a public spaces. Applicants should have experience of creating work that addresses important and/or challenging real-life experiences. As the project involves close dialogue with women experiencing health problems, we are looking for artists with experience of engaging project participants on sensitive matters and that have confidence in working with personal narratives.

Successful applicants will benefit from:

  1. – Fee of £1,980 (Based on 6 days’ work at £330 per day)
  2. – Reasonable travel and accommodation costs related to the delivery of the project
  3. – Opportunities to collaborate with clinical or other professionals and individuals with personal experience of the health inequalities
