COLLIDE International Award: Geneva/Liverpool, 16 January 2017.
Arts at CERN at CERN, the official arts program of the European Organisation for Nuclear Research in Geneva and FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology) announce their international call for artists to enter submissions for the COLLIDE International Award. This is the second year of a successful partnership between CERN and FACT.
The partnership between CERN and FACT articulates around the COLLIDE International Award, which aims to promote dialogue between artists and CERN scientists. In 2016, the open call received over 900 applicants from 71 countries. In its sixth edition, COLLIDE will grant the winning artist a fully funded residency for artistic and scientific research at one of the largest science laboratories in the world, CERN, and at the UK’s leading media arts centre, FACT. The award also comprises a prize of CHF 15,000 (approx. £12,000).
From all the applications received, one artist will be selected to complete a two-month residency at CERN during 2017, to explore and extend their research in order to find new artistic approaches. During this residency the artist will be paired with a leading CERN scientist to deepen the research experience and add another level of scientific knowledge. This is followed by one month at FACT, where the transdisciplinary and collaborative atmosphere, its wide-ranging programme of exhibitions and participant-led projects offer the artist an excellent setting to to further develop their research using FACTLab as a hub for production and public engagement.
During the residency the artist will be expected to develop the awarded proposal with the support of CERN and FACT curators, which will then be considered for artistic production. A curatorial committee will be appointed to review and approve the art production, which will be supported with a budget of up to £50,000. It is expected that the production is completed during the six months following the residency. The final production will be included in a touring exhibition in 2018-2020. Online submissions will be open from today until 10 March for artists interested in applying: arts.web.cern.ch/collide-international-award-0
“FACT Liverpool is very pleased to be the partner to Arts at CERN for COLLIDE for a second year, following a fantastically inspirational and productive 2016. It’s amazing to be able to introduce the public to artists whose work show how intrinsically art and science are connected. Last year’s amazing response to this collaboration from science and art communities and the general public alike shows the importance to keep encouraging curiosity, which is always at the heart of what we do.” says Professor Mike Stubbs, Director of FACT.
“COLLIDE International is a ground-breaking award which influences an international and flourishing scene of art and science. The partnership with FACT provides excellent opportunities to further explore conversations and dialogue between artists and scientists at CERN. I am excited to welcome applications from artists inspired by the cutting edge research environment at CERN and the opportunities that this collaboration brings to them,“ affirms Mónica Bello, Head of Arts at CERN. COLLIDE International Award is part of the COLLIDE CERN FACT Framework Partnership 2016-2018.
