Outsider Craft – Call for Submissions
Support for submitting our work is available at sessions around the country. For details of dates please see the Outside In website. Surgeries run from 2nd July until 19th September.
An exhibition celebrating creativity by self-taught artists from across the UK and abroad who make work in a private domain outside the mainstream.
This project is currently in development and planned to launch in March 2016.
Please contact Emma Daker, Exhibitions and Projects Development Manager if you would like to talk to us about this project.
The exhibition
Outsider Craft combines Outside In’s fourth triennial open art exhibition and Craftspace’s touring exhibitions programme which reflects developments in craft. It will showcase UK creativity by artists who define themselves as facing barriers to the art world for reasons including health, disability, social circumstance or isolation, and who have submitted their work through the Outside In website. The works selected through this open call out will be displayed alongside pieces by historically renowned and invited contemporary Outsider and self-taught artists.
The breadth of the call out will encourage audiences to recognise the important work of key organisations around the country who are supporting artists emerging from the margins. The significance of artists producing their work and developing their practice in isolation will also be acknowledged. This major exhibition, co-curated by Laura Hamilton, will launch at Pallant House Gallery in Chichester, home of Outside In, from 12 March – 12 June 2016, followed by a national UK tour.
The particular focus of this exhibition is to explore the imagination and creativity of those facing barriers to the art world from the perspective of craft, making, materiality and tacit skill. Through an open selection process we hope to showcase extraordinary and perhaps unseen work that reflects the vision and experiences of artists who align themselves with Outside In.
Submissions
Submissions for the open call out are invited from UK based artists whose work is three or two dimensional and centres around craft processes. The term ‘craft’ covers a huge variety of things including ceramics, furniture, glass, jewellery, leather, mechanical objects, metalwork, mixed media, textiles and forms of making linked to folk traditions. Materials used might include fabric, metal, clay, wood, paper, mixed media, found and recycled materials. Craft can be used to describe pieces that focus on materials, processes and the handmade; or perhaps pieces that unite technical skill and imagination resulting in a physical object. We welcome submissions from anyone who considers their work to be a form of craft.
Submission procedure
Submitting work is free and application is via the Outside In website . Each artist is able to submit up to three works for selection and as the works will be looked at online, the quality of the photograph uploaded is very important. Information required includes images, titles of works, dimensions and a description of each piece.
Outside In will be holding a series of nationwide Surgery Days to assist any artists who do not have the skills or facilities to upload and submit their work online. These will take place in summer 2015. For more information, please check the Outside In website.
Submissions will open on 7 April 2015. The deadline for applications is 5pm, 30 October 2015.Â
If you need help at any stage please contact Hannah Whitlock, Outside In Artist Coordinator by emailing h.whitlock@pallant.org.uk or calling 01243 770845
