Artists’ Residencies at Penrhyn Castle
Three P/T residencies December 2015-March 2016
Bursary/Fee: £8,000 per residency

The key aims of the residencies are:
- To challenge the perceptions of local audiences who do not currently visit, and engage them in the processes and history of Penrhyn.
- To engage staff and volunteers.
- To create opportunities for artists to develop their work in response to Penrhyn Castle.
- To create broad public engagement through publication, blog, event, exhibition, performance.
About the residency
Each residency artist will be required to:
- Conduct research at Penrhyn, and develop an understanding of its accepted histories and previously overlooked histories
- Identify themes appropriate for engaging audiences/ local audiences, and identify sectors with which to engage
- Develop the understanding and engagement of the local audience with Penrhyn, through participatory activity
- Develop new work
- Develop the understanding and engagement of staff, volunteers and visitors with the processes of art and develop their sense of project ownership
- Capture the process for sharing (images/text/sound/video)
- Maintain an online presence to share the practice and process of working, with peers and with the public.
A shared working space will be available at Penrhyn. Accommodation may be arranged on-site (for one artist at a time), subject to negotiation. An exhibition of work produced as a result of the residency may be arranged.
About Penrhyn Castle
Penrhyn has a rich and complex history. It is a huge, 19th-century fantasy neo-Norman house built on the site of a medieval fortified manor house. It was designed in the 1820s by Thomas Hopper for George Hay Dawkins-Pennant, the heir to the Penrhyn estate following the death of his second cousin, Richard Pennant, who in turn had made his fortune from Jamaican sugar and the nearby Penrhyn slate quarry.
The project team seek an imaginative approach to some of the themes suggested by the site, such as the accepted histories, and the hidden histories, of Penrhyn and its people, and how these may be reframed for a 21stC audience?
The deadline for expressions of interest is 9am 19 October 2015. No applications after this date will be considered.
