Artist/Maker – Creative Interpretation Commission, Royal Armouries, Leeds

Deadline: Monday 8 February 2016. Paid.

Royal Armouries (Leeds) is seeking creative response from one or more artist/s, jewellery maker/s or metalworker/s to make new work for display in response to objects (mostly highly decorative sword fittings) in a forthcoming touring exhibition: ‘Warrior Treasures: Saxon Gold from the Staffordshire Hoard’ (26 May 2016 – 2 October 2016). The process of making will be captured on film, and the object/s made and film footage will be included within the exhibition in Leeds.

Further details about the project should be requested prior to making an application. Please note that the actual objects from the Staffordshire Hoard will be off display during the period of the commission. There will be opportunities to see similar items, images and research and to speak to curators during this period, but no access to the objects themselves.

Creative Commission Timescale (outline for guidance only)

Wednesday 13 January – Creative commission advertised

Friday 5 February, midday – Deadline for queries to project manager

Monday 8 February – Application deadline

w/b 15 February – Interviews and commission awarded

w/b Monday 16 May – Body of work completed

Thursday 26 May 2016 – Exhibition opening

Sunday 2 October 2016 – Exhibition closes

w/b 3 October 2016 – Deinstallation of exhibition

Budget
The total amount available for this commission (for one or more makers, and not including the filmed element) is £5000.

Application process

Applications should include:
CV with artist statement, including examples of previous work
Up to 10 images of previous work
Creative ideas for this commission (up to 2 sides of A4 including images)
Breakdown of costs
Outline timetable
Collaborative applications will be accepted.

Selection process
Short-listed artists will be invited for informal interview at the Royal Armouries on 15 February 2016.
