Artistic Commissions for Tŷ Newydd Writing Centre, Literature Wales

Deadline: Friday 25 September 2015

Exciting Artist Commissions in North Wales!

For 25 years this centre has been a creative hub, hosting residential writing courses and retreats which cross geographical, linguistic and disciplinary boundaries. Literature Wales has received a Lottery Capital Grant from Arts Council Wales to update and improve the buildings and grounds. Part of the remit of the award is to reconnect with the long history and culture associated with Tŷ Newydd, and also with the local and wider community. Work is currently underway to renovate the centre and as part of this project, Literature Wales is inviting submissions of design proposals from artists and craftspeople for 5 Commissions:

Coffee table – Budget £800
The coffee table will be located in a semi-circular bay window of the Clough William-Ellis designed library at the heart of the house and containing a vaulted ceiling + elaborate white chandeliers.

Garden gate – Budget £1300
Artists, carpenters, blacksmiths and other design professionals, as individuals or groups, are invited to submit a proposal, which must include attachment fittings. The gate should incorporate a celebration of the life of a much loved colleague, Olwen Dafydd, who passed away in December 2014. Olwen’s namesake in the Mabinogion might provide some inspiration.

Poetry trail – Budget £1200
The trail should incorporate 2 existing installations (a Carol Ann Duffy and a Gillian Clarke poem engraved in slate + set into the grass). At least 3 new components should be included in the design. These could comprise sculptures, slate engravings or anything else as long as they have a physical presence, include a poetry component and are weather proof.

Art trail – Budget £4000
This should include at least 4 new physical components and be located along the lane leading to Tŷ Newydd. A particular focus on the entrance to the site, in the vicinity of the existing front gate pillars would be appropriate. Components could comprise sculptures, engravings or anything else as long as they have a physical presence and are weather proof.

Garden benches – Budget £3500
Artists, carpenters, blacksmiths and other design professionals, as individuals or groups, are invited to submit a proposal for the creation of 6 garden benches, each dedicated to a Welsh literary figure associated with Tŷ Newydd and/or Gwynedd.
