ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE @ CLONTER – THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO 7th – 29th JULY
Following the success of Clonter’s Artist-In-Residence in 2016, Clonter is offering its second residency – an opportunity for a local artist to access the summer opera production’s rehearsals, and performances, at the end of which they may or may not produce a piece or pieces of work, in response to the production of Mozart’s – The Marriage of Figaro. The main aim of this residency, which is NOT attached to any fee, is to give an artist access, to enable them above all else to explore ideas. IF they do produce any work at the end of it, a discussion with regards to an exhibition can be had, but there is no pressure to do so.
In 2016 Wayne Hart – an award-winning lettercutter, typographer and sculptor – took up this opportunity. Wayne’s work is traditionally carving in stone and wood, also working with metals, plastics and glass. His work to date has included public art commissions, and memorials, notably the memorial to C S Lewis for Westminster Abbey and the memorial to Edith Cavell for Norwich Cathedral.
Hart discovered his passion for letterforms whilst studying Graphic Design in his native county of Norfolk. He later studied the world-renowned Typography course at the University of Reading where he was inspired towards lettercutting. After further study at the Richard Kindersley Studio, he proceeded to a lettercarving apprenticeship with Pip Hall.
He is a visiting lecturer at the University of Reading. Furthermore, a number of galleries, including the Victoria & Albert Museum, have shown interest in his work. www.craftmaker.co.uk/waynehartww.cathedral.org.uk/visit/things-to-see-and-do/edith-cavell
‘My time at Clonter Opera has provided some much needed time away from my everyday working practice and has offered a rare opportunity to explore one’s own work and ideas. The rich assortment of visual and audio material, and of personalities is leading to the development of new works and the exploration of new materials. I look forward to developing these ideas into finished works, to see the impact on my style and to showcasing the result at Clonter in the future. Thank you to all involved for this wonderful experience‘.
