Artist for Crewe Town Centre, Cheshire East Council

Crewe Town Council and Cheshire East Council invite proposals for public art in Crewe town centre. We are seeking artists to provide creative solutions to cover the windows in some empty shop units.

The art should involve the local community during the design or making process, and be inspired by Crewe’s heritage and future. We particularly welcome ideas marking the 180th anniversary of the first train coming to Crewe. The public engagement element might be targeted at schools, community organisations or the general public.

The art must be easily removable in case the unit is commercially let. The media might include vinyls, chalk paint, posca pens or another creative solution which will brighten the town centre. The overall project comprises 2 empty shop units and a large banner. Artists can send proposals for all or any individual element.

We are interested in hearing from artists who have:

– Experience of producing public art

– Knowledge of the Crewe’s heritage

– Experience of using public engagement / participation to produce art

Budget for the commission is a maximum of £4,500 to include all fees, design, production, public engagement and installation. The selected artist(s) will need to commence work swiftly, with the project completed before Easter. The selected artist(s) should have their own public liability insurance and provide evidence of a DBS check.

Please send a short summary of your proposed artwork identifying how you will meet the objectives, including an outline of how you will involve the public, no more than 4 drawings or images to support your proposal, a CV and short biography, and a detailed budget breakdown. Deadline for proposals is Sunday 26thFebruary. Artists are invited to discuss their proposal with the selection panel w/c 6thMarch. Please send submissions to both Amy Lewis and Hannah Marr, details below.
