ABOUT DOREMIFASOLASIDO

‘Doremifasolasido’ is an annual group residency that invites emerging artists from around the country to Cumbria to forge links between artists and arts organisations working in urban and rural settings. Now in it’s fourth year, previous residencies have taken place at The Merz Barn, the site of Kurt Schwitters’ last Merz Bau, in Elterwater; Florence Arts Centre, the site of the disused haematite mine, Florence Mine, in Egremont; and The Coniston Institute, a community run village hall in the heart of Coniston, in partnership with Grizedale Arts. This year it will take place at Art Gene, in the Art Gene Gallery ,the Nan Tait Centre , which was the  former School for the Advancement of Science, Arts & Technology, in the heart of Barrow-in-Furness; with the support of new media art collective, Full of Noises (formerly Octopus Collective).

This year participating artists are being nominated by partner organisations from around the country, including ACAVA (London), Art Gene (Cumbria), East Street Arts (Leeds), Islington Mill (Manchester), The Newbridge Project (Newcastle) and October Gallery (London)

OVERVIEW FOR THE RESIDENCY WEEK

Over 7 days artists will live and work together, responding to the unique site of Art Gene, in the enigmatic area of Barrow-in-Furness. The town and borough has a rich industrial and maritime past, as well as being an area of natural and historical importance, such as South and North Walney Nature Reserves and Piel Island. During the week artists will be given local tours and access to facilities at both Art Gene’s headquarters and their ongoing projects on Walney island; as well as new media equipment and facilities courtesy of Full of Noises (formerly Octopus Collective). Artists will also join the local community in events, e.g. workshops and discussions with arts initiatives working in rural Cumbria. The week will culminate in a public open day to include an exhibition of artwork created over the residency, a programme of artist-led tours, performances and artist film screenings.

There is no theme per se, the emphasis is on experimenting, progressing and expanding your artistic practice – in whatever form that takes – with the time, space and critical engagement that will allow for this. You will join a supportive community of artists, staff, visitors and users of Art Gene, Full of Noises (formerly Octopus Collective) and ‘Doremifasolasido’ organisers with an affinity to not only develop a more critical, broader and rigorous investigation of the concerns that underpin the artistic process but to consider their placement within a much wider conversation.
