AN £80,000 contract to create miniature versions of an iconic sculpture has been secured by a Stoke-on-Trent pottery company amid fears work could go to China.

Moorland Pottery has begun sending out the first of 10,000 reproductions of Liverpool’s Superlambanana which will be sold to tourists and art lovers from around the world.

The first batch of 2,000 items comes less than three months after the Burslem firm won a rolling one-year contract to supply the souvenirs as licence holders began looking at the possibility of getting work done in Asia.

But trendy Merseyside design shop Utility, which stocks Moorland’s popular Scouseware range, instead suggested that the organisers look to Burslem to get the replicas produced.

Moorland director Jonathan Plant said: “They were looking for a manufacturer in the UK, but were deliberating whether to outsource to China.
“They spoke to Utility, which was retailing the previous version, and they recommended us.”
