Would anyone seriously want to wear a t-shirt that could tickle them? To play with a ball that could wander away from them? Or to walk on a carpet that could record the impression of their footprints and play them back over and over again? All these things are becoming possible thanks to the invention of Super Cilia Skin — an artificial hairy membrane that responds to touch. If you stroke its ‘fur’ it can record the movement of each hair, immediately replaying the ghost of your gesture back to you. If you place your cheek against it, it can give you a synthetic, stubbly kiss. According to neuropsychologists, it could become an invaluable teaching tool; information that arrives
accompanied by physical sensation is thought to be far more likely to lodge itself in long-term memory. Children will learn on computers that purr and gesticulate back. Haptic technology, the technology of touch, is the future.
‘SUPER CILIA’ presents ten artists who aim at re-introducing our unconditional trust in our senses, on the possibilities awakened by touch. Rather than the unconditional cultural surrender sight has been granted, we are being demanded to take part in the artist’s synthesis, we must return to a primal forest populated with the possibilities of experience, assimilation and meaning. Anthony Francis’ fresh tides of paint cavort across the surface, where the ‘skin’ of paint in contact with the skin of the artist “provides the direct and metamorphic interplay between exteriority and interiority”; suggesting thus a “preserved state of fluidity and movement beneath.”
