Free event on 29 March 2011 with Third Floor Gallery shares the secrets of running a successful organisation on a shoestring

This Redeye and Open Eye Photographers Network Meeting features Third Floor Gallery and Peter Hagerty.

Want to exhibit the best international photography without a penny? This has been Third Floor Gallery’s main objective since opening in Cardiff in February 2010. As a small charitable organisation consisting of three trustees (Joni Karanka, Maciej Dakowicz and Bartosz Nowicki) and a growing team of enthusiastic volunteers, Third Floor Gallery represents a return of photography to its grassroots following. This has made it possible to maintain one of the UK’s leading photography programmes without any public funding, instead relying on donations by the public and visitors.

Third Floor Gallery will introduce their working methods and tell you how to start an organisation from scratch – as well as how to keep it running. This will include paperwork, how to beg efficiently, how to cut corners without compromising the work you exhibit, how to approach photographers, how to manage the little funds you might have, how to promote the work of your organisation and how to increase its reach beyond its physical walls. You will gain a realistic insight into the necessary funds and time involved in all of these activities, and on the motivations that led three cash strapped photographers in such an enterprise. The presentation will lead into a discussion about specific organisations you could get involved with or create. Third Floor Gallery will be joined by Peter Hagerty, founder Exhibitions Director at Open Eye, who will discuss the organisation’s beginnings as a DIY artist-run space in Whitechapel, Liverpool.

This is a free event but places are limited. To book a place email or telephone 0151 7093555. Arrive from 18:30.
