It was good to be able to visit the Shankly Suite at Liverpool Football Club this afternoon. I’ve never been there before, saw lots of pictures of my childhood heroes on the walls.

We were there for the MGL ‘Oscars’ Award ceremony which featured the two winning Birthday Card designs for Liverpool’s 800th designed by local schoolchildren. There were several other awards too for some excellent films and animations created by the children from several Merseyside schools.

Chosen from thousands of entries by the city’s school children, two winners had their first opportunity to see the final version at a special awards ceremony at the Shankly Suite in Liverpool Football Club today.

The aim of the competition, which was launched earlier this year, was to allow children to identify what was important to them about the city and how they identify their home. A selected panel of judges from the schools arena finally chose both a secondary and primary winner.

The Liverpool 800th Birthday Cards awards
was part of an evening of celebration at Anfield, with children also receiving Oscars awards in recognition of films and animations produced throughout the school year as well as another MGL initiative to commemorate the city’s 800th anniversary, ‘In my Liverpool Home’.

This project has allowed youngsters to produce films illustrating what Liverpool means to them today and their hopes for the city in the future. As well as the award winning schools all of the films will be shown on the ‘Big Screen’ in Liverpool’s City Centre throughout the summer.

In keeping with the local theme of the competition, which has been organised by Mersey Grid Limited (MGL) with support from the Liverpool Culture Company, the cards have been produced by Liverpool printing firm, Spiers Brackell.
