Lewis Biggs, Director of Liverpool Biennial, Shortlisted for art08 Award

Liverpool Biennial is delighted to announce that its Director, Lewis Biggs, has been shortlisted for an Award in the category ‘Putting the North West on the Map’, recognising his success and achievement in establishing Liverpool Biennial as the UK’s festival of contemporary art.

Lewis Biggs has been Director of Liverpool Biennial since 2000, and was Director of Tate Liverpool, 1990 – 2000. His most significant contributions to the development the North West through contemporary art include: completing the building of Tate Liverpool; an exemplary programme at Tate Liverpool including exhibitions on Mark Rothko, Joseph Beuys, Gilbert & George, Sigmar Polke and Salvador Dali among others, as well as the groundbreaking Artranspennine98 exhibition; commissioning Taro Chiezo’s Superlambanana and Richard Wilson’s Turning the Place Over; and bringing Antony Gormley’s Another Place to Crosby.

The arts play a major part in the life of the region and art08 highlights the sheer diversity and range of great art that the north west is home to. art08 promises to be a fantastic event in which we will celebrate artistic excellence, innovation and energy as we recognise the strengths and the achievements of the arts in the north west.”

The art08 awards is the annual celebration of excellence and innovation in the arts across the north west. Now in its fifth consecutive year, art08 attracted a record number of nominations from the public and arts professionals across the globe, with votes received from as far afield as Cuba and Poland.

The shortlist was announced by Arts Council England, North West, in partnership with the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA). The winners will be announced on 13th November.
