City Sings Gospel – Sunday July 15 07

City Sings Gospel, a project of Liverpool Lighthouse in the heart of Anfield, has spearheaded an incredible Amazing Grace Festival that has gone from strength to strength, supported by the Liverpool Culture Company, to mark the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade and the 800th birthday of the city of Liverpool.

The Festival was launched at Liverpool Lighthouse in February with one of the North West’s advanced screenings of Walden Media’s Amazing Grace. The incredible line up of events has included numerous Sunday Night Live Concerts featuring local and international gospel artists, a live Sunday Morning Service broadcast on BBC Radio Four from the Maritime Museum and Cargo the musical. The highlight of the season of events was a magnificent Waterfront Gospel Music Festival that brought local and national artists together for a free gospel concert at the Albert Dock on Saturday 16th June including BBC Radio 1Xtra’s DJ Fitz who was proud to be participating in such an event and a Transatlantic Memorial Service on board HMS Albion with dignitaries from across the globe on Sunday 17th June. Participants at the event included the Alabama State Senator Vivian Davis Figures, Bishop Errol Brooks, Bishop of North East Carribean and Aruba, Colin Hilton, Chief Executive of Liverpool City Council and Liverpool City Council Leader Warren Bradley, who described the event as a ‘tremendously moving service.’

The festival will draw to a close with the spectacular John Newton Musical Evening at Liverpool Lighthouse; the UK’s First Dedicated Urban Gospel Arts Centre in the heart of Anfield on Sunday 15th July at 7:30pm.

The concert will premier new works based on the former slave trader turned church minister’s songs and will feature the international Stavanger Gospel Choir from Norway, Love and Joy Gospel Choir, the Liverpool Philharmonic Gospel Choir and local City Sings Gospel Choirs. Tickets for this musical event are £5.00 for adults and £3.00 for children (12 years and under) and concessions.
