I caught the end of this programme on Saturday, waiting for the Culture Show to start. Didn’t realise he was a local lad, he’s bloody good!
From Daily Post…
Last night, clarinet player Mark Simpson was preparing for an international career as a musician.
The 17-year-old, from West Derby, provided the latest boost to Liverpool’s Capital of Culture status when he won the title of BBC Young Musician of the Year.
Mark, who is also a budding composer, triumphed after giving a dazzling performance of Nielsen’s Clarinet Concerto at the final in Gateshead on Saturday.
After a weekend of celebrating, Mark will be brought down to Earth again today, when he returns to King David High School, in Childwall, where he is studying art, German and music A-levels.
He also attends the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and is principal clarinet with the National Youth Orchestra.
