The Birth Rites Collection is shared between the University of Salford Midwifery department and the Royal College of Gynaecologists and Obstetricians in London. The aim of the collection is to encourage debate and increase awareness around childbirth practice. It uses art to consider the social, political and cultural implications of birth.

This year the annual Award and Exhibition has had 111 entries from all over the world.  These entries have been whittled down to a shortlist of 23 by judges Helen Knowles, Birth Rites Curator, and Althea Greenan of Goldsmiths University Women’s Art Library, who will also choose one award winner.

The winner will receive n a residency at The Women’s Art Library at Goldsmiths University and a stipend, provided by the Birth Rites Collection. This opportunity will be a chance for the winning artist to make new contacts in the London art scene and to create new work.
