Freelance Contributor – Community Education Pack, The PurpleDoor

Mission:
The PurpleDoor is a new community arts and social space opening in Liverpool in 2021. Building on PurpleCoat’s theatre work for working-class artists and communities over the last 10 years, the new building will be a platform for Northern creatives and will aim to reimagine what a theatre space can and should be by putting new audiences at its centre.

Purpose:
We strongly believe that many people want to learn more about the world’s issues – from race to sexuality and gender – but don’t know where to begin.  In today’s world, where societal norms are changing rapidly, we don’t believe it is enough to tell people to educate themselves without also providing them with the means to do so. If we can help people to educate themselves, we create a better and more tolerant society, more able to understand, engage with and champion difference.

About the Commission:
We are looking to commission 10 x 500 word write-ups to provide a brief introduction to topics around race, gender, disability, sexuality and wellbeing. These very short, pocket guides, will be combined to provide a go-to for people who are keen to educate themselves in these areas but don’t know where to start.

We strongly believe that these guides should be produced by and from the perspective of those people with lived experience of these issues, for whom these topics are not issues at all but facts of life. In a very short introduction, we intend the guides to highlight key experiences, debunk myths and provide recommendations for further reading or watching.
