The Wordsworth Trust has been providing training opportunities for people starting careers in museums, libraries and literature for over 30 years, and has a high reputation across the sector for the standard of training it provides. The Traineeship programme is designed to provide an all-round experience in a full time role (five out of seven days a week) of both an historic house and museum that receive 40,000 visitors a year.

Trainees will be joining the Wordsworth Trust at a very exciting time. In January 2016, the Heritage Lottery Fund awarded the Wordsworth Trust a development grant towards a new project: ‘Reimagining Wordsworth’. The grant puts the Wordsworth Trust on course to make profound and exciting changes to its site and activities in time to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Wordsworth’s birth in 2020.

Trainees will specialise in one of the following departments:

A Collections Trainee will gain experience of managing a Designated collection of approximately 68,000 items, including manuscripts, books and artworks. They will work with the Collections Team, and will gain knowledge and experience of museum practice and procedures, the recording and caring of collections, exhibitions, working with researchers, providing opportunities for visitors to access the collection, and much more.

An Education Trainee will work with the Education Development Manager and Education Officer to deliver the Wordsworth Trust’s core schools offer to children from Foundation Stage – KS5. They will develop new school and outreach sessions, both onsite and offsite, including those delivering Arts Award. They will also deliver family activities both onsite and in Cumbrian libraries.

The Traineeship will run from January 2019 until December 2019. Trainee roles are funded by Arts Council England, and Trainees will be paid in line with National Minimum Wage and National Living Wage regulations.
