THG Gallery & Arts Development Manager

Thelma Hulbert Gallery is an ambitious gallery that supports and promotes contemporary art and craft and is recognised as outstanding for its accessibility and inclusivity. As the cultural hub for East Devon District Council, THG plays an important role in the visual arts ecology of the South West, bringing together art, environment, health and wellbeing as important outcomes for the Council’s Corporate Plan. THG aims to develop audiences through engagement by engaging with a wide range of communities in East Devon and beyond, striving to be, accessible, engaging and inspirational to all its visitors.

About the role:

This is an exciting and rare opportunity to spearhead the strategic direction and artistic programme of a small but important art gallery, bringing together arts, cultural regeneration, social engagement, environment and health and wellbeing whilst also identifying new directions, partnerships and opportunities for THG’s ongoing and future success.

Providing leadership and vision for the THG team, its volunteers and stakeholders, you will be expected to develop a high quality artistic and commercially viable events and outreach programme whilst at the same time diversifying and securing THG’s income sources and sustainable forms of revenue relevant to a rural arts organisation.

Your focus will be on linking art with health and wellbeing, and identifying new directions, partnerships and opportunities for THG’s ongoing and future success, raising the public profile of THG through showcasing and sharing its achievements both within EDDC and regionally.

About you

With a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in a related field and experience of management in a professional arts organisation, you will also have an enthusiasm for contemporary visual arts. Highly personable and engaging you will be adept at building positive relationships with a fantastic team of staff and volunteers, together with a wide range of partners and key stakeholders.

Your demonstrable track record in fundraising and income generation from a variety of sources, together with experience of strategic business planning and budget management, will ensure you are able to achieve financial targets and commercial success.

With the flexibility* to work some evenings and weekends, you will also be someone who thrives on organisational ability and the need to juggle multiple and sometimes competing priorities.
