Museum Collections Internship (3 available), Former Haig Mining Museum Site / West Cumbria Mining

Salary Grade: pro-rata annual salary of £15,000

Reporting to: Museum Collections Project Manager

Temporary contract: 3-month contract, starting June 2017, dates TBC

Main Purpose

To assist the Project Manager in collating existing documentation with artefacts, identifying donors/lenders and returning/rehoming artefacts from the former museum collection according to MA Ethical Disposal Guidelines.

Employment Base

Former Haig Mining Museum Site/ West Cumbria Mining, Whitehaven.

Summary of Main Duties:

To assist the Project Manager with the disposal of a former Mining Museum collection according to the Museums Association Ethical Disposal Guidelines.

To assist in setting up and maintaining appropriate computerised recording systems for each stage of the process.

To assist with the manual handling and arranging of the collection in storage.

To assist in communicating with donors, lenders and interested museum third parties.

To pack items for transport/transfer to new locations.

To assist in the creation and presentation of a display about the achievements of the project in the final phase.

Special Features 

Ideally have familiarity with UK Museum Documentation Standards.

Ideally have familiarity with computer based Museum collection management and documentation systems.

What We Are Looking For

Students studying for, or recent graduates from, a relevant undergraduate course; archaeology, history etc. who are looking for experience in a curation role with a museum. In addition, students applying for/or graduated from a relevant Masters course in museum studies are desirable
