Evaluator, Catalyst Science Discovery Centre and Museum

We are looking for a highly experienced evaluator to undertake an ongoing and comprehensive evaluation of our Inspiring Science Fund scheme. The evaluator will be involved throughout the delivery and completion of the scheme to August 2020. Creative or innovative methodological approaches that help empower beneficiaries and disseminate learning to drive cultural change are welcomed alongside traditional approaches.

Evaluation Breakdown:

  • Front end evaluation, including baseline data gathering from staff, trustees, volunteers and a range of audience groups and general visitors, using qualitative and quantitative data/information
  • Formative evaluation during the life of the project based on a detailed methodology
  • Liaison with Graphic Science, the external evaluators of the ISF programme appointed by the Wellcome Trust to avoid duplication
  • Liaison with John Moores University to maintain an overview of the mental wellbeing research element of the project and to incorporate a summary of this into the overall evaluation
  • Production/Presentation of a mid-term evaluation review
  • Production/Presentation of a final comprehensive evaluation report by September 2020

Skills and Experience:

  • Substantial experience of evaluating large-scale capital programmes, preferably in the museum and/or science sector
  • Experience of completing and presenting comprehensive reports
  • Expertise in both qualitative and quantitative evaluation
  • Experience of involving community groups in evaluation
  • Experience of developing innovative ways to gather and measure feedback
  • Analysis of complex data and the presentation of this in a variety of formats
  • Ability to communicate at all levels and to deal productively with challenging feedback


  • Project fee of up to £20,000 including VAT
  • Reasonable additional expenses (e.g. travel) to be negotiated at contract stage
  • Additional budget may be available for dissemination and/or innovative evaluation methods

Tender Timeframe:

  • Deadline for receipt of tenders is 11th February 2019 5pm; any tenders received after the deadline will not be considered.  Interviews will likely be held 20th February 2019
  • We anticipate the contract will be awarded w/c 25th February with a start date asap after that.
