The Project:
We are seeking an experienced Creative Producer to co-manage and co-deliver a recently funded Arts Council England project in conjunction with Blackburn Museum & Art Gallery titled ‘Kick Down the Barriers’. The project has emerged following both the 2016 ‘Casey Review Report’ and the 2018 BBC Panorama programme that labelled Blackburn as one of the most segregated towns in Britain. It is imperative to kick down these barriers, labels and stigmas, and give Blackburn people the opportunity to challenge, unpack and redefine these public messages, so that a more comprehensive narrative about the town can emerge.
The project will locate socially engaged artists and researchers across five areas of Blackburn, that have been identified as “segregated,” in order to interrogate and challenge the stigmas and barriers that they have been given. All the artwork and research developed through the residencies will feed into a long-term strategy reimaging how the Museum can incorporate and celebrate the new work within its existing collections.
The successful candidate will co-produce the project with Sophie Skellern, and they will work with Lydia McCaig project assistant and Rebecca Johnson Arts & Heritage Manager at Blackburn Council to deliver the project.
