For the past five months Austrian artist Karl-Heinz Klopf has been working in residence in North Liverpool, across the neighbourhoods of Everton, Anfield and Breckfield. As a way of marking the end of his residency, Klopf has created YOU’RE HAVING A LAUGH, a unique part installation, part exhibition, part performance and part party representing the idea of a great night out.

Klopf has created a dynamic diagram depicting the network of interwoven social groups encountered during his residency. Presented as a drawing, hand drawn in chalk on an oversized blackboard, it links the people and places visited by him. The diagram is supported by sketch-books, drawings, videos and some very special objects found for the occasion.

YOU’RE HAVING A LAUGH features a number of the people Klopf has been talking to and working with as well as his own work inspired by the people and places. Collaborators include local artist Frank Green, new local band Young Kicks along with the good-humoured support of a guest MC for the night, Liverpool comedian Sam Avery.

During his residency he has made strong connections with many people throughout the surrounding neighbourhoods and is currently working on a film work that aims to capture something of the particular spirit and life of the Everton, Anfield and Breckfield area, along with a proposal for a temporary public art project.

Klopf’s residency in Liverpool is part of an exchange between Liverpool and Linz based artists and part of Liverpool Biennial’s Urban Interventions programme.

This project has been funded with support from the European Commission.
