SUMMARY:Williamson Art Gallery & Museum: Williamson Art Gallery: Sweeney's
 Unquiet Islands
DESCRIPTION:\nSweeney’s Unquiet Islands: exhibition\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSweene
y’s Unquiet Islands is an exhibition of original prints made by Norther
n Irish Wirral-based artist Martin McCoy.\n\nOrigin\n\nTaking their starti
ng point from the medieval Irish story Buile Suibhne (bˠɪlʲə ˈhɪv
ʲnʲə or “Bwullya Hevna”)\, renamed Sweeney in modern texts\, Martin
uses the motif of landscapes -as described in the story- to create a cont
emplation on our relationship to place and the role of location in shaping
identity.\n\nTo summarise\, the story describes the cursed life of Suibhn
e (Sweeney)\, King of Dal Araidhe. Having fallen foul of the Christian Chu
rch\, Sweeney is condemned. He is forced to spend his remaining years roam
ing Ireland and the Western Isles\; at night\, in all weathers\, in a cons
tant state of anxiety. Stripped of his human status -and bound by his phys
ical and metaphorical hunger- he questions his identity.\n\nArtMartin’s
etching series replies to the text. Manipulating known locations and layer
ing them in ways that create ambiguous qualities\, Martin mirrors Sweeney
’s ravings. The images confuse and distort our understanding\, helping u
s to question what we know about the images.\n\nThe exhibition will featur
e a show catalogue. The exhibit will feature additional works from Pamela
Sullivan’s The Forgotten. Also on display will be information about Ho
t Bed Press\, the local print studio in which exhibition was pressed.\n\nT
he Liverpool Irish Festival proudly presents this exhibition in partners
hip with The Williamson Art Gallery (funded by Wirral Council).\n\n\n\n\
