The Williamson Open aims to reflect part of the activ e  current visual arts scene in Wirral.\n\nAfter Birkenhead opened its fi rst Museum and Art Gallery in 1912 there were two Spring Exhibitions but t he First World War stopped them and the initiative was not picked up in th e town afterwards.\n\n\n\n\nThe Borough of Wallasey\, however\, did take i t up and from 1962\, a Spring Exhibition was held each year at Earlston Li brary. Following the creation of Wirral Borough Council the exhibition bec ame open to all in Wirral but continued to be shown in Wallasey until 1983 when the first Wirral Spring Exhibition was held at the Williamson.\n\nIn 1989\, the exhibition was opened to photographers\, with the support of B irkenhead Photographic Association who continued that support for 25 years .\n\nThe exhibition has gone from strength to strength over those years an d it has been a consistent factor that prize winners are purchased for the gallery collections. In this way\, the Williamson has acquired some fanta stic work to maintain its representation of local artists that stretches b ack over 200 years.
