SUMMARY:Walker Art Gallery: William Brown Street: 100 years NUWCM Protest:
Peace Art Happening outside Walker Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Art Happening\, Liverpool\nMonday 13th September 2021 2-4pm\nTo
mark the Centenary of the occupation of the Walker Art Gallery by the Nat
 ional Unemployed Workers’ Committee Movement.\n\nBACKGROUND\n\nIn 1921 t
he Walker was occupied by the National Unemployed Workers’ Committee Mov
ement (NUWCM). A movement formed in the years following the First World Wa
r when thousands of men had returned to unemployment and poverty in Liverp
ool.\n\nThe slogan of the NUWCM was “Work or Maintenance” and their ac
tion was non-violent protest and passive demonstration to raise levels of
Poor Law relief for families facing starvation.\n\nEarlier in 2021 Artists
Union England and Independents Biennial Liverpool conducted a survey of a
rtists livelihoods. The results showed during the pandemic artists struggl
ing with mental health and low levels of work and welfare maintenance.\n\n
AUE launched the Good Practice Charter for Artists in October 2020 which s
ets a benchmark for artists' working conditions. The Charter aims to tackl
e inequality and lack of diversity in the sector by raising the standards
of pay and conditions.\n\nWant to find out more about the event?\n\nhttps:
