SUMMARY:Warrington Museum & Art Gallery: Warrington Museum & Art Gallery: H
 aecceity: Tracy Hill
DESCRIPTION:Haecceity: Tracy Hill\nWarrington Museum &amp\; Art Gallery\nSa
turday 10 March — Saturday 16 June 2018\nFREE\n\nNow on display at Warri
ngton Museum &amp\; Art Gallery are the new capacitive ink screenprints an
d gallery wall drawings from Warrington Contemporary Arts Festival 2017 pr
izewinner Tracy Hill.\n\nHer winning piece Matrix of Movement has influenc
ed the body of work within Haecceity\, a non-qualitative property responsi
ble for individuation and identity. That property or quality of a thing by
virtue of which it is unique or describable as “this (one)”.\n\nRespo
nding to the Gallery’s Festival theme ‘History of the Future’ relati
ng to Warrington’s past and present. Haecceity is a commissioned piece b
y WCAF (Warrington Contemporary Arts Festival) with funding from Arts Coun
cil England. Inspired by the remnant mosslands around Warrington\, Hill us
es commercial mapping equipment to capture the essence of these unique pla
ces. Recorded via a portable 3D laser scanner she applies the data from 36
0 degree scans to create multi-layered images.\n\nFor the first time 4 of
her ground-breaking conductive ink screenprints are being exhibited in the
gallery. These works offer visitors the opportunity to lightly touch the
prints to hear recorded sounds from local nature reserve Risley Moss. Offe
ring a multi-sensory experience is important to the artist as it allows vi
sitors to re-imagine a new future for these vital wetland spaces.\n\nRevis
iting the 4 moss-land sites within close proximity to Warrington - Cadishe
ad\, Little Woolden\, Risley and Delamere formed part of Hill’s research
. Cadishead and Little Woolden are two former peat extraction sites\, whic
h once formed part of the historic Chat Moss mossland. The communities of
Warrington are inextricably linked with this moss\, which was formed 10\,0
00 – 15\,000 years ago during the last ice age. For decades it has witne
ssed many changes and Hill’s aim is to communicate their precarious exis
tence whilst striving for a deeper understanding of our surroundings.\n\n
“When driving to a destination the emphasis is on getting somewhere as q
uickly as possible. I want people to stop every now and again and reconnec
t with the experience of being in a space.\n\nMy drawings represent a memo
ry-map as opposed to a physical map so visitors can see my artistic repres
entation of these places.”\n\nThis second interactive element to Haeccei
ty sees Hill spending a week in residency at the Gallery completing live d
rawings directly onto the gallery’s own walls. Projecting the data she h
as carefully collected over many years of extensive work\, onto the walls
and freely drawing with limestone chalk is a relevant reminder to visitors
about the art-making process.\n\nWarrington Museum &amp\; Art Gallery Exh
ibitions &amp\; Interpretation Officer\, Roger Jeffery commented “Her ha
nd-drawn imagery offers a fresh perspective of the memory of the physical
encounter with a place. Utilising her 20 years background as an educator a
nd researcher at UCLAN (University of Central Lancashire) Tracy Hill bring
s with her a contemporary approach within the Gallery setting.”\n\nBring
ing together printmaking\, drawing and digital technology to generate a un
ique collection of works where digital and physical worlds overlap\, Haecc
eity constitutes a key body of work at an exciting point in Hill’s caree
 r.
