SUMMARY:Warrington Museum & Art Gallery: Warrington Museum & Art Gallery: D
 reaming of Dead Fish
DESCRIPTION:Artist inspired by Warrington Museum returns for exhibition\n\n
An artist inspired by Warrington Museum &amp\; Art Gallery’s collection
has returned to the venue with an exhibition of her own.\n\nHannah Leighto
n-Boyce’s works range from site-specific and ephemeral actions\, to draw
ing\, sound and installation\, and her working methods combine material an
d process-led exploration with present day and archival research.\n\nShe e
xplores place\, object and body relations through themes of surface and er
asure\, embodiment and connectivity.\n\nFor Dreaming of Dead Fish\, her so
lo exhibition at Warrington Museum &amp\; Art Gallery\, Leighton-Boyce has
developed a series of newly-commissioned works using un-accessioned items
in the museum collection alongside glass\, soot\, slide film and projecti
on.\n\nThis new body of work\, commissioned by Warrington Contemporary Art
s Festival with funding from Arts Council England\, has been inspired by i
tems in the museum’s ephemera collection.\n\nThe Invisible Girl\, for ex
ample\, is a Victorian object of curiosity on display in the Warrington To
wn Hall 1840 exhibition\, within which a diminutive figure was either susp
ended in mid-air in a globe or represented through a disembodied voice.\n\
nVisibility\, separation and embodiment have fed into Hannah’s research
and studio practice.\n\nThe relationship between the works and their envir
onment\, and the materials and processes chosen\, capture senses of longin
g and touch\, proximity and distance\; acting like a series of extended mo
ments and pauses\, they attest to the fragility of experience.\n\nAccompan
ying the exhibition is a newly commissioned essay by Dr Craig Staff.\n\n-
Hannah Leighton-Boyce lives and works in Manchester.\n\n- She studied at W
inchester School of Art (2005) and completed the MA at Manchester School o
f Art\, Manchester Metropolitan University\, in 2012.\n\n- Recent works in
clude: a series of sculptures exploring salt as a metaphor for the body\,
developed through a residency at the Glasgow Women’s Library and exhibit
ed at Castlefield Gallery (2018)\; a collaborative live sculpture made wit
h residents of Helmshore\, Lancashire (2014) set within the context of the
area’s industrial heritage\; and a sound installation at Touchstones Ro
chdale (2016) funded by a New Opportunities Award (New Expressions3)\, whi
ch explored ideas of disembodiment and labour through the resonant propert
ies and work history of objects within the museum’s collection.\n\n- Rec
ent group exhibitions include Ruth Barker &amp\; Hannah Leighton-Boyce\, C
astlefield Gallery (2018)\; Excuse Me While I am Changing\, Rogue Projects
