SUMMARY:Walker Art Gallery: Walker Art Gallery: Sickert: A Life in Art
DESCRIPTION:Sickert: A Life in Art\n18 Sep 2021—27 Feb 2022\n\nLargest re
trospective of the artist’s work to have been held in the UK for more th
an 30 years.\n\nThe exhibition will showcase around 100 loaned paintings a
nd 200 drawings. The Walker holds 349 of the artist’s drawings\, which i
s the largest collection in the world. Most of these have never been displ
ayed before. Together\, they demonstrate the varied\, yet vital\, role tha
t drawing played in Sickert’s artistic practice.\n\nSickert is one of Br
itain’s most important artists\, with a career spanning six decades. Bor
n in Munich\, Germany\, he moved to Britain as a child in 1868. As a young
artist\, he worked as an apprentice to the American painter James Abbot M
cNeill Whistler (1834-1903) who\, along with the French impressionist pain
ter Edward Degas (1834-1917)\, greatly influenced Sickert’s early work.
