DESCRIPTION:An Independents Biennial Exhibition\n\nThese Fragments\nVincent
  Lavell\n\nI am currently working on a series called ‘Fields’. In thes
 e paintings (www.vincentlavell.co.uk) I am drawing together scenes or char
 acters from a number of older paintings to create new narratives and inter
 pretations. For me art history is a depository of images\, norms and ideas
  that can be revisited in the context of current issues and debates.\n\nOp
 ening times Monday to Sat 10.00-4.00pm.\n\nAbout the artist\n\nI have alwa
 ys enjoyed using a range of techniques to explore a range of subjects. How
 ever\, the material process of painting itself and the ways in which image
 s function within the wider culture have always been central to my practic
 e.\n\nPainting has a unique place in our visual culture. This uniqueness i
 s always being threatened by technology (the camera etc) changing critical
  reception (The End of Painting 1981 – Douglas Crimp) and the diversity 
 of artistic practice available to contemporary artists (installation\, dig
 ital media\, the expanded field of sculpture).\n\nIt is a mistake to see p
 ainting as just another medium in a range of options. The processes\, subj
 ects\, and modes of visualisation that represent the history of painting h
 ave dominated European visual culture. This history affects the way we see
  the world today. So despite everything\, I choose to paint.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\
 nAbout Northern Lights:\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n\n\n\n\nNorthern Lights is an artist
 -led space operating out of 45\,000sq/ft in the CAINS Brewery Village. Bal
 tic Creative announced a 10-year deal in mid-2016 that would transform thi
 s disused canning warehouse\, into a range of innovative spaces for artist
 s\, designer-makers and creative industries. Northern Lights containing af
 fordable artist studios\, gallery spaces\, workshop units\, music rehearsa
 l space and log-burning mezzanine studios.\n\n\n\n&nbsp\;
