Other Cinemas is an award-winning project initiated by Arwa Aburawa and Tu
rab Shah which is dedicated to finding better and more equitable ways to m
ake and share films. We do this by showcasing the work of Black and non-wh
ite filmmakers through free neighbourhood screenings\; by creating network
s for Black and non-white filmmakers to learn and collaborate through a fr
ee\, year-long\, alternative film school\; and through our own independent
filmmaking practice. These strands of our work – new ways of making and
sharing film – are deeply connected as we know that the interaction bet
ween filmmakers and their communities is radically transformative and can
move us to redefine the ways films are made\, for who and how success is d
efined.  Other Cinemas was recognised as a 2022 Film London Lodestar\, wa
s awarded ‘Best Film Programme’ by Cinema For All in 2020 and 2021\, a
nd was also named  ‘Best Community Cinema’ in the country in 2022. Ou
r work has been supported by Doc Society\, Film London and we were selecte
d for the inaugural ‘Support Structure for Support Structures fellowship
by Serpentine Gallery. Arwa Aburawa and Turab Shah will be sharing their
latest film as part of the Liverpool Arab Arts Festival 2023.www.othercine
