SUMMARY:Toxteth TV: Video Odyssey: WowFest: Turning a Book into a TV Series
 : Ashleigh Nugent
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\nTURNING A BOOK INTO A TV SERIES – ASHLEIGH NUGENT\n\n
\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAshleigh Nugent and Tom Thostrup\, co-founder and Mana
ging Director of 2LE media\, will talk through the process of how Ashleig
h’s electric debut novel\, Locks\, was optioned for TV. Locks was pub
lished by Picador Books in 2023 and received rave reviews\, including 4
out of 5 stars in the Daily Telegraph. Later that year\, he secured a TV d
eal with Royal Television Society award-winning and BAFTA-nominated produc
 ers\, 2LE Media. \n\nLocks is a coming-of-age comedy of errors\; a novel
about growing up\, wising up\, and finding your place in a world of oppos
 ites. Aeon\, a mixed-up and mixed-race teenager from a leafy Liverpool sub
urb\, is desperate to understand the Black identity thrust upon him. He gr
ows dreadlocks and immerses himself in ‘gangsta’ rap. Aeon’s journey
of self-discovery takes him to Jamaica\, where he finds that smoking weed
\, messy locks and massive red boots don’t necessarily help him to fit i
 n. Within days of his arrival he is mugged\, arrested and banged up in a J
amaican detention centre. Seen as the ‘white boy’\, he finds that his
journey of self-discovery has only just begun – and he’s going to have
to fight for the respect and recognition he deserves. \n\nThis event pro
mises to be an inspirational experience for any budding screen writers\, a
s well as a fascinating glimpse into the real-life struggles portrayed in
this irreverent and authentic black identity debut.  \n\nAshleigh Nugent
was the first black male writer from Liverpool to have a traditional boo
k deal in his genre. Ashleigh has also written for theatres and been publi
shed in academic journals\, poetry anthologies and magazines. Ashleigh was
a finalist in Writing on the Wall’s acclaimed Pulp Idol novel writing c
ompetition\, with the original first chapter of Locks published in our 2
 014 anthology\, Pulp Idol – Firsts. He was Liverpool City Region’s A
rtist of the Year in 2021 and is now a special advisor at the Shakespeare
North Playhouse. Ashleigh is also course director at RiseUp\, where he use
s his own life experience\, writing and mindset expertise to support priso
ners and inspire change. \n\nTom Thostrup is a TV and film producer and
runs an independent production company called 2LE Media. He has worked in
television for over twenty years\, producing both scripted and unscripted
programmes\, including the Bafta and International Emmy-nominated Facejack
 er\, and most recently 2LE Media’s first feature film\, Dance First\, di
rected by James Marsh (The Theory Of Everything\, Man On Wire) and starrin
g Gabriel Byrne\, Aidan Gillen and Maxine Peake. Locks\, by Ashleigh Nuge
nt\, is the first books 2LE Media have optioned for adaptation. \n\nYasmi
n Ali is a freelancer in the TV industry\, currently working in scripted
TV development. She has worked on documentaries\, factual entertainment an
d children’s programming\, and a range of productions including Waterloo
Road (BBC One)\, Tan France: Beauty and The Bleach (BBC Two)\, Say Yes T
o The Dress Lancashire (TLC)\, &amp\; CBBC. Yasmin is also an artist and
writer\, with artwork exhibited at The Tetley Gallery\, OUTPUT Gallery
and Regent Street Cinema. Her monologue for “My White Best Friend North
” at the Liverpool Everyman Theatre was recently published in an antholo
gy by Bloomsbury. Yasmin has also written for a range of platforms and pub
