SUMMARY:Victoria Gallery & Museum: Victoria Gallery & Museum: Something Bor
rowed\, Something New - Ian Irvine vs the VG&M
DESCRIPTION:SOMETHING BORROWED\, SOMETHING NEW\nIan Irvine vs the VG&amp\;M
 \n\nVictoria Gallery &amp\; Museum\nUniversity of Liverpool\n25 May to 19
 October 2019\nOpen Tues - Sat 10am to 5pm\n\nArtist Ian Irvine applies a s
ubversive\, contemporary twist to the VG&amp\;M’s collection of historic
paintings. When invited to respond to the collection\, his immediate reac
tion is to appropriate a number of images and transform them using collage
\, screen print and some irreverence.\n\nHe zones in on formal portraits\,
such as the elegant Anna Ashton painted by Georgian artist Joseph Wright
of Derby\, and makes interventions that entirely changes the narrative of
the original\, turning them into something surreal\, dark and disturbing b
ut frequently humorous.\n\nHis silkscreen prints invoke the spirit of arti
sts Robert Rauschenberg and Richard Hamilton\, adding layers of colour and
painterly gestures\, which allow the original images to remain visible th
rough a prism of overlaid colours.\n\nUsing the VG&amp\;M’s paintings in
this way allows the formal qualities of the original works to be apprecia
ted\, while turning them into something entirely different. Something rela
ted to Pop Art prints of the 1960s and 70s.\n\n More about the artist:\n\
nIan Irvine was born in Toxteth\, and now lives in Salford with a studio i
n Bolton.  He has a BA (Hons) Fine Art from Manchester Metropolitan Unive
rsity and an MA in Fine Art from University College Chester. Ian has been

oup and solo shows.\n\nIan is a tutor in art history for the WEA\, and has
worked as a lecturer in colleges and universities around the northwest\,
including the University of Bolton.\n\nSelected exhibitions:\n\n I Had To
