SUMMARY:Victoria Gallery & Museum: Victoria Gallery & Museum: She’s Eclec
tic: Women Artists of the VG&M collection
DESCRIPTION:She’s Eclectic: Women Artists of the VG&amp\;M collection\n\n
Victoria Gallery &amp\; Museum\nUniversity of Liverpool\n\nRuns until end
 April 2019\nOpen Tues - Sat 10am to 5pm\n\nThe VG&amp\;M presents a vibran
t new exhibition showcasing the diversity of artwork by women artists in t
heir collection.  Some of the artists are world famous and others are les
s known but still talented and interesting. Some are local\, some are inte
rnational. It’s an eclectic mix.\n\nThe paintings\, prints and sculpture
s on show range in date from around 1900 to contemporary. Many have not be
en publicly displayed for several years. The University has been acquiring
artworks since the 1880s but there was a major drive to add new works dur
ing the 1960s and 70s when the campus was undergoing a period of rapid exp
ansion. Acquisitions of that time included a sculpture by Elisabeth Frink
and a large painting by Gillian Ayres. The University has continued to ad
d to its collection over the years.\n\nThe exhibition features the latest
major acquisition\, Runway Show by Fiona Banner RA\, purchased with the su
pport of the Contemporary Art Society in 2018.\n\nIn 1971\, American art h
istorian Linda Nochlin published her ground-breaking feminist essay\, Why
Have There Been No Great Women Artists?  She wrote that historically\, am
ongst other factors\, the male-dominated art world had restricted opportun
ities for women artists to thrive.  Nochlin’s essay sparked a debate wh
ich helped to reappraise the position of women artists.  She died in 2017
and the exhibition forms a tribute to her.\n\nNicola Euston\, Head of Mus
eums and Galleries for the University of Liverpool\, comments: “We are p
roud to celebrate and share some of our amazing artworks created by women
artists. We are confident that everybody will discover something new to en
 joy and inspire.”\n\nVictoria Gallery &amp\; Museum\, Ashton Street\, Li
