SUMMARY:The Tapestry: The Tapestry Liverpool: The Gift of John Heartfield
DESCRIPTION:The Gift of John Heartfield\n\nWorld premiere. In 1968\, John L
ennon was in his first year at Liverpool School of Art and Design. The stu
dents invited German-Jewish artist\, John Heartfield\, to Liverpool. In re
turn he gifted this complete set of his pre-WW2 anti-Nazi photomontage pos
ters.\n\nIn 1968\, when John Lennon was in his first year at Liverpool Sch
ool of Art and Design\, students around the western world were revolting.
Our art students invited German Jewish artist\, John Heartfield\, to Liver
pool to speak about his 1920s and 30s anti-Nazi photomontage posters. In r
eturn\, in 1976\, his widow gave the Art School a gift of a complete set o
f his groundbreaking posters where\, since\, they have hidden unseen in th
e library archives. A third John\, John Hyatt\, curates and recreates an e
xhibition of this powerful political work – an exhibition originally com
piled in Communist East Germany.\n\nA public talk will take place at the W
alker Art Gallery by\, yes\, a fourth John! John J. Heartfield\, John Hear
tfield’s grandson\, will talk about his grandfather’s work and his mem
ories of him. This will be the first time John J. Heartfield will have spo
 ken in Britain.
